Mold is a common term used to describe fungus that grows on food or other surfaces. It can be white, black or almost any other colour. It often appears as a stain or smudge, which may be accompanied by a musty smell. In order to grow, mold needs moisture and a material it can live on.
Common sources of moisture are: water infiltration, roof leakage, plumbing leakage, high humidity levels, and lack of ventilation. Usually, materials and places where mold grows are window sills, fabrics, carpets, kitchen walls, bathrooms, laundry areas, and wet wood (more common in winter months). Mold releases air-borne spores which can have detrimental effects on your health. It can also exacerbate existing health problems such as asthma, severe allergies, or other respiratory conditions. Those who are most likely to be affected by mold are children, the elderly, and those with a weakened immune system.
